Several years ago I came across a very battered old prayer book in and amongst my late father’s books. The spine had severed and it was in two pieces with pages falling out and many of them were badly damaged. It had no use or value as a book.
However it was over 200 years old and, reading the text, it must have been printed in the reign of King George 111, sometime before 1818. It was almost as old as the USA. I could not bring myself to throw it away. Then came an idea. The pages could be used to create new art-works bridging the centuries.
Well before modern scientific medicine had been developed, the sick had to rely largely on prayer during times of ‘common plague or pestilence’. Today we might call such events pandemics and have vaccines and ventilators, but illness and death still threaten.
