In The Basement Ola Intu portrayed a scenery from repeating dreams, in which she runs through underground labyrinths. Using watercolor mixed with ink and sharpies she pictures a disturbing landscape of a soul lost in a gloomy, industrial landscape. The mechanic nature of tubes, gears and pipes reflects stiff cultural constructs of modern society and the struggle of the individual to match them. In a static, cold composition we can find an unsettling sense of loneliness and be constantly watched. The basement is an allegory of a symbolic journey through subconscious depths, rooted in Jung's archetype philosophy. The piece is influenced by science fiction stories and eerie childhood memories.
