Red and white gelatin capsules sit in the place of actual capsules. An over-the-counter pain killer, Co-codomol is a very common and useful drug in combatting pain. This piece is relatable to so many, but these words written by a woman and her experience of abortion last year.
“Nothing about an abortion is kind to your body, only the situation you find yourself in once complete. Relief. I am so thankful I live in a country where the accessibility to this operation is so easy, fast and effective. My heart goes out to the countries where women find themselves in law breaking, life threatening situations to resolve an accident or assault. When I say endurance, this word is not used lightly. The pain was blinding to the point I considered knocking myself unconscious. It lasted eight hours and left me weak and frail. I was given codeine by the nurses, thankfully. However the nausea, which is one of the side effects, caused me to throw up every pill I swallowed. The physical whiplash affected my body for 2 months after. However, it was the mental effects from the hormones in the pill causing a premature miscarriage which had the worst impact on me. In the consultation I was offered support, however feeling relatively well I declined. I later realised I had been experiencing depression for months only when I started to get better. Support and later check ups to make sure the patient is ok should be mandatory, in my opinion. The only after-treatment was a pregnancy test. When I learned that there was a surgical procedure to remove the foetus I wished that this had been offered to me. I believe it should be more readily offered to all women. I understand why this may not always be possible for the NHS to provide since it requires people's time, which famously, is money. But what price do you put on the Nation’s mental health?”
